In 2006, I collaborated with artist/curator Jenny McMaster, in the development of a performance art piece entitled The Cake Show. The Cake Show examines feast, feminism, frocks and festivity through the medium of cake. Complete with Gateau Chapeau, Loaf-ers, cake dresses, a literary reading from Margaret Atwood’s the Edible Woman, cake songs and the re-enactment of cake rituals, The Cake Show encompassed the concept of cake on many levels. When do we feel devoured? Has cake become the sacrament in our secular world? By exploring the idea of Cake and having discussions about cake, we are able to develop a new perspective on the culture of food. We performed The Cake Show at the opening of Pukka Gallery (Ottawa, 2006)) and at the Toronto Alternative Fashion Show [FAT] (2006).
