Introduction

I participated in World Rivers, curated by lee tracey (Chicago). Artists from around the world are taking part in their local communities and combining their efforts for an international audience. Each artist is asked to purchase a piece of white fabric (20m), submerge it into a river of significance in the area in which they live and document it with photos and/or video. This is a celebration of our local waterways and the importance of water to our human condition.

For the Ottawa portion of the project, I collaborated with photographer Tiffany Teske who documented the fabric's manipulation. We took the fabric to the Rideau Canal in the winter of 2005 and to the Ottawa River in June 2005. I coordinated the shipment of the fabric to the east and west coats of the country, where geographers Geraldine and David Jordan participated in the project in the La Have River (NS) and the Frazer River (BC). Then the fabric was sent to visual artist Paul Fortin in Inuvik (NWT), who documented the fabric in the mighty Mackenzie River.

The fabric has now been sent to lee tracey in Chicago where she is planning a large scale installation. She created the website www.worldriversproject.com. Please visit the site for images of participants from around the world. Photos in this gallery are from the Rideau Canal, the Ottawa River and the Frazer River.
